Alumapalooza 9 Fine Art Invitational Airstream Paintings

I just shipped my painting of our Sweet Potato, painted at Plein Air Texas last year, to the Airstream center in Jackson Center, Ohio, for Alumapalooza's 2018 Fine Art Invitational.

Invited artists' work will be shown this year at the Riverside Art Center, not far from the Airstream factory.

We had the opportunity to attend our first Alumapalooza last year, where my painting of our Bambi Sport 16 won the People's Choice Award.

I will also be shipping my new mini painting of our old Bambi to Alumapalooza this year to be auctioned off to benefit the local Fish Pond Food Pantry.

Alumapaloozas are fun events with lots to see and do, and not just for Airstreamers. Visit this year if you can from May 29th - June 3rd. There is nothing else like it.

Indiana Artists 86th Annual Juried Exhibition & Painting Workshop

I was honored to be asked by the Indiana Artists to judge their 86th Annual Juried Exhibition this year at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, and to teach a three-day workshop as well.

I was scheduled to give a judge's talk at the museum on Saturday, April 7th, before judging the exhibition, but Mother Nature had other plans. Winter seems to be fighting spring this year, and bad weather cancelled my Friday flight out of San Antonio to Indianapolis. I actually had to race to the airport Thursday night right after finding out my Friday flight was cancelled, just so that I could catch another flight to Dallas, where I would have to sleep at the airport overnight to catch an early morning flight to Indianapolis. Not ideal, but that's life sometimes. Then, that flight out of Dallas got cancelled due to bad weather, so the airline put me on a flight to Nashville, and then to Chicago, from which I was finally able to make it to Indianapolis. My judge's talk had to be cancelled, but I made it in time to get to the museum to judge the exhibition, and for the start of my workshop on Sunday.

This is the first demonstration painting I did for the workshop. I didn't get a chance to get photographs of my other two demonstration paintings before they sold.

I really enjoyed working with the artists in this group, and hope to have a workshop there again next year. Next time I'll drive instead of fly.

Pet Portrait Commissions

I travel the entire country for plein air events, and to teach workshops, but I also travel for portrait commissions. Pet portraits in particular have long been one of my specialties, and my favorite subject to paint.

Gateway International Painting Competition February Finalist

Thank you judge Mary R. Pettis for choosing my "Aglow" (oil on linen, 9"x12") as a Gateway International Painting Competition February finalist.

Judge's comment: "In this little picture we feel the artist's reverence for the compelling beauty of a white rose in light. I'm not certain how anyone could see this painting and ever look at a rose in the same way again. I believe that this is our job as artists: to reflect back to all the inherent beauty in the abundance of life around us!"

New Studio for the Visual Arts Floral Painting Workshop

I was invited to teach a three-day floral class at the New Studio for the Visual Arts in Jupiter, Florida, the week before I'd be participating in the 5th Annual Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival.

We had to hustle to get all the way from the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational to Florida in just two days for this workshop, but it was well worth it. I was lucky yet again to work with a great group of artists.

On Thursday evening, I did a demonstration painting and gave an artist talk at the studio.

We painted outside on Friday, the last day, in order to give the artists more of a feel for painting outdoor flowers, even though we had to use cut flowers (the studio wasn't able to convince a local nursery to let such a large group of us paint on site).

We gathered at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, where we worked in the shade with a lovely view. It was a great way to end the class. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of the four demonstration paintings I did for this workshop - they all sold before I could get them photographed.

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts Painting Workshop

I had the opportunity to teach a three-day oil painting workshop this month in San Angelo, Texas, sponsored by the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

The weather didn't allow us to squeeze in any plein air painting, but we covered a lot of ground in the time we had. It is always a pleasure to work with a great group of artists.

Portrait Painting Workshop & Video, Coppini Academy of Fine Arts

My wife Kimberly shot video at my February 3rd portrait painting workshop at the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts in San Antonio, Texas, and put together this short promotional video to help me spread the word about my 2018 workshops. I really enjoy teaching because, as I say in this video, I truly get as much as I give when I work with my fellow artists.
