Throwback Thursday - "Morning Spills Into the Cove"

For #ThrowbackThursday, here's a piece from 2018. This view of Dana Point Harbor from Harbor Point Park was painted plein air for the 2018 Laguna Plein Air Painting Invitational. It went on to win multiple awards at the event.

This piece shows my approach to painting plein air on a hot day. Get out before dawn and finish by sunrise. That way, you can relax for the rest of the day.

Art Review - "Lisbon to Belem" by Fred Taylor

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday features a travel poster art by British artist Fred Taylor.

Taylor was a master of breaking even the most complicated images down to flat graphic shapes. I find this piece particularly striking in its use of color. The building is rendered in shades of orange, which contrast with the black used in the figures. Taylor then places a few spots of rich blue within the entrance to the building, vibrating against the orange and drawing our eye to the center of the image. Also notice that small bit of dark greenery in the top left, to balance the dark mass of the figures.

Born in London in 1875, Taylor studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. He worked extensively as an illustrator for railway and shipping firms, and insisted on traveling to the location to truly capture the feel of his subject matter. During WWII, he was employed as a camouflage artist. Taylor passed away in 1963. While I do not know the location of this particular work, many public galleries in Britain hold his paintings.

"Waiting" - Western Art Painting

Sometimes you get a glimpse behind the scenes. This one gave me the sense that horses feel exactly like us at the end of a long day of work. After herding cattle all day, they too are ready to just go home. Technically, it was a challenge to get the sense that most everything is in the shade, while still keeping the colors rich.

Art Review - "The Sunlit Room" by Carl Holsøe

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday is an interior by Danish artist Carl Holsøe.

This piece has such a wonderful control of values. Notice how the values all around the window are light enough that they give the impression of the sunlight blasting out the scene. The tile floor in the foreground also reflects this strong light, differentiating it from the wood floor beyond, but also creating a sense of depth by contrasting so severely with the darks between the tiles.

Born in 1863 in Aarhus, Denmark, Holsøe studied under the great Peder Severin Krøyer. While he painted a variety of subjects, Holsøe is primarily known for his interiors.

Art Review - "Team and Wagon" by Nicolai Fechin

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday is an oil sketch by the great Russian artist, Nicolai Fechin, that I find as inspiring as any larger, more ambitious composition.

Despite its small scale and economy of brushstrokes, the painting conveys so much detail and movement. All of this comes from Fechin's skill in simplification and confidence in paint application. It's a great reminder that loose paintings are not sloppy, but require well thought out strokes, perfectly placed. With just a few expert brushstrokes, one can say more than with a hundred haphazard dabs.

SOLD - "Trails of Jupiter" Plein Air Painting

Happy to see this piece go home with a new collector. It's a plein air painting from one of my favorite tranquil spots in Florida, the Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island. I've always loved the way the palm trees meld together into a protective canopy, creating a beautiful pattern of dappled light.

Landscape Detail Demonstration - Day Three - Plein Air Southwest Plein Air Painting Workshop

Today’s demonstration for my second plein air painting workshop at Plein Air Southwest was all about finding interest in a simple, everyday subject. No big vista, no flowers, no figures, just simple leaves. Another challenge was to overcome the mass of greens, using color temperature, saturation, and chroma.

Architectural Demonstration - Day Two - Plein Air Southwest Plein Air Painting Workshop II

My demonstration this morning on day two of my second plein air painting workshop for Plein Air Southwest. Once again, I painted architecture today for my class, in order to show that painting a structure can often be easier than something organic, in terms of measuring and gauging its correctness.

This demo was a tough one, as the weather changed back and forth from stormy to sunny no less than four times while I was painting. In the last five minutes of my demo, sunlight hit the bottom of the stairs, adding clarity to the center of interest.

Art Review - "Hafen von Triest (Harbor of Triest)" by Egon Schiele

I've been in Galveston, Texas for the last week teaching workshops and judging the Outdoor Painters Society's Plein Air Southwest event. The many beautiful paintings of boats brought to mind a number of great paintings of boats from art history, so this week's #MuseumTourTuesday features a piece by Austrian artist Egon Schiele.

This painting is a rich stylization of the subject in an expressionistic manner. Many of the lines, both in the rigging and the water reflections, were created by dragging the back end of a brush through the thickly applied paint, revealing a darker color below. Painted when the artist was only 17, it shows the quality of draftsmanship that Schiele would become known for in his later figurative and self-portrait work.

Landscape Demonstration Painting - Day One - Plein Air Southwest Plein Air Painting Workshop II

Art Review - "A Capriote" by John Singer Sargent

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday features an early work by the great John Singer Sargent from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. It's a well known piece, so you may have seen it before, but I just wanted to call attention to what I find so interesting about it.

Unlike his later work, the paint is very thinly applied for the most part. So thin, if fact, that we can clearly see the texture of the canvas throughout the painting. The thickness or lack of thickness in the paint makes no difference to the final outcome. It's a beautiful work, and Sargent's mastery of value is on full display, even at the age of 22.

Sargent went on to paint two copies of this piece, and featured the model, Rosina Ferrara, in a number of other paintings while visiting the island of Capri. The painting was exhibited at the French Salon in 1879, where it was negatively received, while in the same year it was praised by critics in New York at the Society of American Artists exhibition.

Art Review - "Still LIfe With Hydrangeas" by Arthur Streeton

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday is another uncharacteristic painting by a well known artist. Australian painter Arthur Streeton is highly regarded as a landscape painter, but his flowers were also quite impressive.

The hydrangeas are deftly painted, with the dark background allowing the shapes to clearly stand out. Of particular note is the variation in color within the petals. We can see purples, pinks, greens and even yellows. This range of color provides a sense of volume that goes beyond a more simplified value scale.

Born in 1867, Streeton was heavily influenced by French Impressionism. He served as an official war artist during WWI, and was knighted in 1937.

Art Review - "Vita Liljor" by Anders Zorn

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday is a watercolor by the great Swedish painter Anders Zorn. This piece is part of the collection of the Zorn Museum in Sweden.

Even as an oil painter, you can learn so much from watercolor, and this painting is a great example of that. The first time I saw this piece was in a poor reproduction, where the details within the flowers were almost completely lost, yet they still clearly read as lilies. It's the outside overall shape of the flowers that describes their form. The variation within the lilies is subtle. It adds to the painting, but doesn't drive the composition.

FYI, there's no so-called "Zorn Palette" in use here. Zorn normally used a full spectrum palette.

Art Review - "Jardí d'Aranjuez. Glorieta II (The Garden at Aranjuez. Arbor II)" by Santiago Rusiñol i Prats

Spring is now in full swing, so this week's #MuseumTourTuesday features an amazing garden painting by Spanish artist Santiago Rusiñol, from the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Garden paintings are difficult, as there's so much to capture, and they are often overly simplified or overpainted. Rusiñol, on the other hand, achieves a perfect balance. He perfectly captures the shapes of every element in the garden, and yet this is nowhere near a photo realistic rendering. Nothing is haphazard in his approach either. The sense of realism is further heightened by his depiction of the heavy flowers that droop onto the path.

Born in Barcelona in 1861, Rusiñol was also a respected journalist, poet and playwright. He studied in Paris, and was a leader in the Catalan modernisme movement.

SOLD - "The View From Guenther House"

My thanks to Janice at Hindes Fine Art for sending this painting home with a collector. It is particularly special to me because it’s one of my favorite spots on the San Antonio River Walk. This beautiful home has such a warm and inviting feel. I love the palm trees and the way it all lights up at night.

On our first visit to San Antonio almost a decade ago, we biked the River Walk to have breakfast at Guenther House just before Christmas. This scene was our daytime view as we enjoyed brunch outdoors, and it gets even more charming at night. The whole experience really put us in a festive mood, and became one of our first great memories of San Antonio, a city that grabbed our hearts right away and kept us coming back for years, and that we are so happy to finally call home.. We’ve walked and biked this area many times now, and day or night, this is still one of our favorite parts of the River Walk.

"Radiant" - New Western Art Portait Painting

I've been posting in progress details of this painting for a few weeks, and here is the full and final painting. This man's regalia was amazing to behold, and a challenge to capture. I was reminded of a star, sending out its rays in every direction, represented by both the feathers and his piercing eyes.
