Floral Painting Exhibition - Peninsula Gallery

I really enjoyed painting a new series of florals for an upcoming exhibition at the Peninsula Gallery in Delaware. In a number of these pieces, I decided to go larger in scale, and explore how flowers can integrate into the landscape and act as a part of the whole.

I’m sorry I’ll have to miss the public opening reception on May 7th, as I’ll be teaching in Georgia. This floral show will be on exhibit at the gallery until May 31st.

Art Review - "Dog Under Lilacs in Downpour" by Jamie Wyeth

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday features a painting that exudes pure joy. It also includes some of my favorite things - a dog, flowers and rain while the sun is shining.

Jamie Wyeth is considered to be one of America's greatest painters, and the emotion that comes through in this painting is a perfect example of why. He has used the same reference of this dog in a few paintings, but the choice to combine the dog with the colorful flowers and the movement suggested by the water creates a powerful piece, evoking the appreciation of the little things in life that can bring so much happiness.

Art Review - "Ethelinda and James" by Willard LeRoy Metcalf

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday features a painting by Willard Metcalf. Known mostly for his landscape paintings, Metcalf was also an accomplished figure painter.

This particular piece depicts Ethelinda Vanderbilt Allen and her fiancé James H. Ward a year prior to their marriage. Ethelinda's brother was also an artist and a close friend to Metcalf.

I particularly love the relaxed atmosphere of the painting. Notice the soft edges throughout the piece. Ethelinda's face is barely there, and yet Metcalf perfectly sets her mood as she gazes across the table at her fiancé. The highlights on the glass bottles stand out and act as a central axis for everything else in the painting to pivot around. Also of note, the hints of the wicker in the chair. Just enough to give us a sense of the texture without overwhelming us with an overstated pattern.

"Ethelinda and James" • Willard LeRoy Metcalf • 15" x 17"• Oil on Canvas
• 1890 • Private Collection

April 2022 Art Newsletter - The Simplicity of Shape

When it comes to more complicated subject matter, I find that it’s easier to think in terms of shapes rather than drawing with lines.

Sign up for my latest art newsletter for a step by step demonstration on how to use shape to simplify a complicated subject, control your composition, and find balance in a painting:

Floral Painting - "Paper Lantern"

I just finished up this painting for a floral show, and as always, a white rose proves to be a surprising challenge.

I must have painted the shadow areas on the rose four times before I got it right. I had to keep pushing it darker and darker. It's a yin and yang thing. Without the dark, there can be no light.

Art Review - "Laziness" by Ramon Casas

This week's #MuseumTourTuesday features one of my favorite pieces by Ramon Casas at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.

I love this for the straightforward sense of design. The painting is built around large shapes, vary akin to abstract expressionism, which would not emerge for another 40 years. Everything is barely rendered, and the face of the woman is simply stated. What makes it work so beautifully for me is the bookcase effect of the bright light coming through the door and shining onto the far side of the bed, with the dark of the woman's hair balanced in between.

SOLD - "President Tyler's Eternal View" Plein Air Painting

This piece is now with a collector who’s had an eye on it for some time.

I painted this scene for a plein air event a few years ago, and when I turned it in, I was asked why I would paint a cemetery, but my choice had nothing to do with the location’s purpose. I just liked the way the morning sunlight filtered through the trees and struck this beautiful wrought iron gate, creating a strong vertical shadow pattern in this quiet, peaceful spot. I wasn’t sure I could pull it off, which made me want to try, because facing my painting fears is honestly the best way I know how to try to get past them.

It’s still one of my favorite plein air paintings, and I’m glad it now belongs to someone who feels the same way about it that I do.

Pet Portrait Demonstration - Day Three - Lighthouse ArtCenter Painting Workshop

My pet portrait demonstration this morning on the last day of my painting workshop at Lighthouse ArtCenter.

Kimberly photographed this German Shepherd years ago while volunteering at San Francisco Animal Care and Control. After a very long journey and a lot of hard work by the shelter staff, Najee was adopted by a police officer and his family, and was a treasured family member by the time we visited him in his new home for a photo session. I think my portrait painting of Najee still hangs at the shelter.

Art Review - "In a Somovar Shop" by Arnold Borisovich Lakhovsky

Today's #MuseumTourTuesday post features an interior painting by Ukranian artist Arnold Lakhovsky.

The shifting temperature of the light in this piece is fascinating. Notice the cooler temperature of the light outside the window, and as it hits the blue wall just inside. Beneath the window, the reflected light on the wall to the right and the face of the craftsman are both dramatically warmer, lending an exciting vibration of color between the two areas.

Beginning in 1904, Lakhovsky was a part of Ilya Repin's workshop at the Higher Fine Art School in Saint Petersburg, where he became a founding member of the Jewish Arts Encouragement Society. Emigrating to Paris in 1925, the artist became a board member of the Russian Artists Union in France. In 1925, Lakhovsky moved to the United States, painting portrait commissions in New York before relocating to Boston to teach at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts until his death in 1937.

Landscape Demonstration Painting - Day One - Lighthouse ArtCenter Painting Workshop

My landscape demonstration from a photograph this morning on day one of my latest painting workshop at the Lighthouse ArtCenter.

Painting the landscape is about learning how to simplify, and the trails at Blowing Rocks Preserve as a subject are a good way to practice that, as there is so much going on, you can’t capture everything, only the suggestion of it.
