Art Review - "Pueblo Woman of Taos"
Today's #MuseumTourTuesday's post features a painting by a Saint Louis born artist, Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, at the Albuquerque Museum.
Like a number of his contemporaries, Berninghaus began his career as an illustrator, before traveling to the Southwest and finding himself captivated by the landscape and culture. In 1915 he became a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists. He split his time between Taos and St. Louis, until making a permanent move to New Mexico in his early 50s.
This painting shows the influence of Berninghaus' illustration and lithography background. While the piece is filled with interesting paint textures and exciting brushwork, the design is far more important to the strength of the painting. Notice the solidity of the shapes throughout the piece. Even if all of the textural qualities of the paint were to be removed, the flat shapes would still clearly convey the composition.

Floral Still Life Painting - "Nest"
My latest painting is a floral/still life that is a bit larger than normal for me.
Due to the pandemic, Kimberly and I spent more time in one place than we have in a number of years, and we actually enjoyed nesting a bit, so to speak, in my temporary studio space. This piece is not only representative of that feeling of home, but also a kind of closure on our months of quarantine. Now that we're back to traveling and making art, home is wherever we are.

Art Review - Henriette Wyeth Hurd and Andrew Wyeth
Kimberly and I recently visited the Albuquerque Museum, where we were able to view paintings by Andrew Wyeth and Henriette Wyeth Hurd, his sister.
Henriette was the eldest of famed illustrator N.C. Wyeth's five children, and Andrew was the youngest. Carolyn Wyeth, N.C's second child was also an accomplished painter and teacher, taking on Jaime Wyeth, Andrew's son, as one of her students. The artistic connections in the family don't stop there.
N.C. Wyeth's apprentice, Peter Hurd, not only taught Andrew to work in egg tempura, but went on to marry Henriette in 1929.
Due to contracting polio at the age of 3, Henriette drew with her left hand and painted with her right. A child prodigy, she enrolled in the Normal Arts School in Boston at the age of 13 and entered the Boston Museum of Art Academy the following year. By the age of 16, she was a well known portrait artist.
Henriette purchased the frame holding the painting in the next tweet during a trip to Spain in 1959, but struggled to find an appropriate painting for it until almost 20 years later.
The sitter is her grandson David, and the artist felt that the elaborate German music box behind him connected to the intricacies of the frame.

While Henriette left her family’s home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and relocated to Roswell, New Mexico to be with her husband Peter, Andrew remained in New England.
Karl Kuerner and his wife Anna owned the neighboring farm in Chadds Ford, which became a central subject of Andrew’s work. The farm is now a National Historic Landmark based on its association with Wyeth. Karl’s son, Karl J., studied with both Carolyn Wyeth and Andrew Wyeth, becoming a successful artist in his own right.

Art Review - "Pastor de Cabras, Neo Mexicano" by W. Herbert Dunton
"Pastor de Cabras, Neo Mexicano (New Mexican Goatherder)" • W. Herbert Dunton
• Oil on Canvas • 1926
What initially strikes me about this piece is the theatrical lighting of the scene. As the central element, the boy emerges from the shadows to be mostly bathed in light, while the goats and the dog are only partially revealed. Other than a few small areas revealing livestock, the background is also subdued in shadow.

Art Review - "Moose Near Long Lake" by Carl Rungius
Today's #MuseumTourTuesday is a piece by wildlife artist Carl Rungius at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas.
Born in Germany in 1869, Rungius spent much of his free time sketching animals at the Berlin Zoo. At the age of 27, he immigrated to the United States and focused on landscape and wildlife paintings. He became known as the first career wildlife artist in North America.
This piece clearly shows Rungius' love for both wildlife and the landscape. While the animals are beautifully painted, just as much attention is given to the surrounding landscape, with its atmospheric qualities. The paint textures that Rungius achieved in his work have become a standard for other wildlife artists who have since followed.
