Art Review - "Echo" by Ellen Thesleff

Today's #museumtourtuesday features a piece by Finnish painter Ellen Thesleff. Considered as one of the leading Finnish modernist painters, Thesleff initially studied at the Finnish Art Society Drawing School, before moving to Paris at the age of 22.

What I find fascinating about this piece is the placement of values. The darkest darks are are located in the trees, and yet they don't distract from the girl's head, which utilizes only midtones. It's the value contrast of the bright sky surrounding the head that maintains its position as the focal point.
