"Ross Alley" & "Back From the Bazaar" - Cityscape Paintings, San Francisco, California

Woke up to a cool morning that reminded me of our time living in San Francisco, California.

For #ThrowBackThursday, here are a couple of pieces depicting Chinatown San Francisco, one of the most colorful areas of the city.

"Ross Alley" • Oil on Canvas • 24"x36" • Available at www.patricksaunders.com
Ross Alley is now home to Golden Gate Fortune Cookies Company, but was once the center of the Barbary Coast, the city's red-light district. I was struck by the way the cool green of the building flowed into the light. The perspective of the buildings, street, signs and balconies proved to be particularly challenging.

This painting was in the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association's 2016 Signature Impressions show, and included a feature article in the September 2018 issue of Southwest Art Magazine, for which I was the cover artist.

"Back From the Bazaar" • Oil on Canvas • 24"x36" • Private Collection
This is the corner of Sacramento & Grant. Early morning can be surprisingly peaceful in the area.

This painting won Third Place, Signature Division, in the Oil Painters of America's Fall 2017 Online Showcase. It was also featured in the
American Impressionist Society's 2017 National Juried Exhibition, and in my September 2018 article in Southwest Art Magazine.
