Throwback Thursday - "Towers and Water Towers, New York" - Chelsea, Manhattan

For #ThrowbackThursday, a painting I did in 2006 when we first moved to New York. This was the view out our window in Chelsea.

"Towers and Water Towers, New York" • Oil on Board • 19"x26.25" • Private Collection
New York has been on my mind lately, because this summer is the first time in a long time that we won't be returning for an annual visit to a place that still feels like home. I was really looking forward to my dog portrait demonstration in June at the American Kennel Club's Museum of the Dog in Midtown, which will be rescheduled for 2021.

We love you New York. You will always be in our hearts, and we'll see you next year.

Art Review - Maria Oakey Dewing - Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

For #museumtourtuesday, a painting at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery in Washington D.C. Kimberly and I were able to view this exquisite piece again last summer.

Some of my favorite floral paintings are the works of Maria Oakey Dewing. Her oil paintings evoke an almost medieval tapestry feel, giving a sense of a dense garden of flowers and suggesting that so much more exists outside the picture plane. The painting is more of a landscape than a floral, never focusing on a single bloom, but rather leading the viewer through the entire composition.

"Garden in May" • Maria Oakey Dewing • 1895 • Oil on Canvas • 23 5/8" x 32 1/2”

The flowers take on almost an abstract quality, and in fact, Dewing was an early convert to Modernism, writing: “The flower offers a removed beauty that exists only for beauty, more abstract than it can be in the human being, even more exquisite. One may begin with the human figure at the logical and realistic, but in painting the flower one must even begin at the exquisite and distinguished.”

The flowers are loosely painted, with passages of both thick and thin paint which adds to the sense of depth and the abstract quality. The paint feels just on the verge of being overworked, yet never does, offering a sense of richness and texture.

Maria was married to Thomas Wilmer Dewing, who went on to overshadow her own career. She collaborated on a number of paintings with him, often painting the floral portions, and rarely signing her name. Sadly, she regretted her own career later in life, believing that she had not realized her full potential and feeling unable to compete with her husband. But what a career it was, helping to found The Art Students League of New York and leaving behind paintings as inspiring as this one.

REVIEWS - Patrick Saunders "The Dog Portrait In Oils" Pet Portrait Instructional Video

The reviews of "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗜𝗻 𝗢𝗶𝗹𝘀", my first instructional video are in, and I'm overwhelmed by all the great feedback - thanks everybody!

𝗢𝗠𝗚 ... I just watched your dog portrait video, and it was over the top 𝗙𝗔𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗦!!! I learned so much and will rewatch many times in the next three months of the rental. You are just awesome and a great teacher!! I look forward to taking another “video workshop” or a face-to-face workshop from you soon!!! Thanks again for making the video!!! - 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗛.

Patrick - thank you so much for offering this video. It's so, so good. I rented it because I decided to take on a dog portrait (for a gift for daughter-in-law since I can't go shopping) and thought I needed a bit of guidance. And it did that in spades. The best part is the lessons are applicable to 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 we paint. It's so well done too. Loved seeing every stroke, every decision so clearly and your narration was so helpful. Thanks again for doing these - a little silver lining in these crazy times! It was one of the best I’ve seen. Can’t wait for additional offerings. - 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗛.

Patrick, I just rented your video and think it's fantastic!! It is a wonderful refresher of all the things you demonstrated in your workshop. The three-month rental term is great and a wonderfully affordable value. I look forward to your future videos! Thanks! - 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦.

I just finished watching it. It was such a great, succinct way of explaining all that is needed for a painting to be successful. At the same time, the way you paint, laying each brushstroke down (without blending) is fantastic! Also you handle edges differently, which is great. I think one of the most important things you do is not to make a line drawing! Your paintings are very expressive with beautiful brushwork. There are many other great things that I liked but won’t divulge. I don’t want to give away too much. This video is great for beginners and for intermediate to advanced! I believe it will definitely put one’s paintings to the next level if they follow your method of painting. I’m so glad that I have a workshop with you in September. It will help me try your method before then!
- 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗭.

RE-imagining the 2020 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational - Atlanta, Georgia

Watching Lillian Kirbo Ansley and everyone involved in the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational roll up their sleeves and get creative about how to carry on with the 2020 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational is really inspiring.

Rather than reschedule or cancel, they have RE-imagined it, and I am honored to be a part of this great invitational again this year.

I hope you join me in supporting all of their hard work by watching their live event on their Facebook page tonight at 6:30 p.m., when they will kick-off the 6th Annual Olmsted Plein Air Invitational with a ‘Virtual’ Collectors Preview Gallery Exhibit + Sale.

Art collectors, this is an excellent opportunity to purchase original art by nationally known painters from the comfort of your own home!

My calendar reminded me today that I was supposed to ship this painting to the Oil Painters of America's 29th National Exhibition at the RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas

Unfortunately, the show has been delayed until October. On the plus side, I plan on being there in person. Hope to see some of you there.

The Dog Portrait in Oils - "Looking For Home" Dog Portrait Painting

With most of us spending our days at home, it's a great time to consider fostering a shelter animal. Kimberly captured this beautiful boy's image while working with a rescue organization in Kansas City, Missouri. I'm drawn to the eyes, so I had to paint him.

Kimberly also shot a video of my entire painting process for this one, which is available on my website.

No Preconceptions - My "The Artful Painter" Podcast

Hey friends, my "The Artful Painter" podcast with Carl Olson, Jr. is now live, as part of REimagining the 6th annual Olmsted Plein Air Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.

My conversation with Carl truly ran the art gamut - everything from what I paint, and why, to social media and my thoughts on modern art and making art videos.

You can listen to my podcast here: https://bit.ly/Patrick-Saunders-The-Artful-Painter

"The Dog Portrait in Oils" - Painting Instruction Video

Artist friends, I’m pleased to announce the release of my first instructional painting video, “The Dog Portrait In Oils”.

Kimberly and I really enjoy traveling to offer my workshops in person, but due to current circumstances, we made the decision to capture my painting process in a video. While we can't perfectly match the full workshop experience, we've done our best to include as much information as possible. In addition to a full painting demonstration, I also cover materials, a simplified way of thinking about color, and an approach for analyzing and improving your paintings.

This first video focuses on a dog portrait, but I plan to make a series in order to demonstrate a variety of subjects in different conditions. Each one will show how, using a single approach, you can paint absolutely anything.

We're creating these videos completely on our own, and offering them exclusively as three-month streaming rentals, with the goal of keeping pricing as affordable as possible. Look for additional videos in the future, as well as an online mentoring program.

Here's where you can rent my pet portrait video on demand:

Happy painting everybody!

"Ross Alley" & "Back From the Bazaar" - Cityscape Paintings, San Francisco, California

Woke up to a cool morning that reminded me of our time living in San Francisco, California.

For #ThrowBackThursday, here are a couple of pieces depicting Chinatown San Francisco, one of the most colorful areas of the city.

"Ross Alley" • Oil on Canvas • 24"x36" • Available at www.patricksaunders.com
Ross Alley is now home to Golden Gate Fortune Cookies Company, but was once the center of the Barbary Coast, the city's red-light district. I was struck by the way the cool green of the building flowed into the light. The perspective of the buildings, street, signs and balconies proved to be particularly challenging.

This painting was in the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association's 2016 Signature Impressions show, and included a feature article in the September 2018 issue of Southwest Art Magazine, for which I was the cover artist.

"Back From the Bazaar" • Oil on Canvas • 24"x36" • Private Collection
This is the corner of Sacramento & Grant. Early morning can be surprisingly peaceful in the area.

This painting won Third Place, Signature Division, in the Oil Painters of America's Fall 2017 Online Showcase. It was also featured in the
American Impressionist Society's 2017 National Juried Exhibition, and in my September 2018 article in Southwest Art Magazine.

Art Review - James McNeill Whistler - Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art

Let's start a new thing, #MuseumTourTuesday.

Here's a great collection of James McNeill Whistler watercolors Kimberly and I viewed last July, featured in a special exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, in the Freer Gallery of Art & Arthur M. Sackler Library.

These are compelling examples of the decisiveness and spontaneity of the watercolor medium, and something I strive for in my own work even as an oil painter.

"Pink Note - The Novelette" • James McNeill Whistler • 1883-1884
• Watercolor on Cold-Pressed Paper • 25.3 x 15.5 cm
This is a painting of Whistler's mistress, Maud Franklin. Clearly painted rapidly, Whistler must have carefully considered the composition prior to making any marks as it works perfectly.

Notice the triangular balance between the table, the furniture behind the bed and the figure. Whistler also uses the "note of pink" in Maud's sweater to zero in on the focal point, and further enhances that area with the horizontal stripes surrounding the figure.

"Violet and Amber - Tea (Note in Opal: Breakfast)" • James McNeill Whistler • 1882-1884
• Watercolor on Cold-Pressed Paper • 25.2 x 17.6 cm

This is one of those "barely there" paintings that says so much with so little. Whistler uses a major value change to draw our eyes to the figure, but what I find fascinating is the way he painted so little in the window and tabletop areas of the painting. This gives the illusion of bright light spilling through the window with a minimal amount of effort on Whistler's part.

”Rose and Silver - Portrait of Mrs. Whibley" • James McNeill Whistler • 1895-1896
• Watercolor on Rough Brown Wove Paper • 28.2 x 18.8 cm
Another quick painting that suggests a lot of detail through it's decisive drawing. The face is expertly defined by the perfectly rendered edge of the profile. We're drawn to the face through the use of the lightest value surrounded by the dark, but also by the path created by her pink dress surrounding the dark boa she wears.

"Milly Finch” • James McNeill Whistler • 1883-1884  • Watercolor on Cold-Pressed Paper
• 29.8 x 22.5 cm
"Flower Market: Dieppe" • James McNeill Whistler • 1885
• Watercolor on Hot-Pressed Paper • 12.8 x 21 cm
In this tiny painting, Whistler again paints with a minimal amount of strokes, but deftly drives us to a clear focal point with the woman in the darker valued shawl. She is also the one surrounded by the intense colors of the flower cart, another tool used to bring our attention back to this point.

"Variations in Blue and Green" • James McNeill Whistler  • c. 1868
• Oil on Millboard Mounted to Wood Panel  • 46.9 x 61.8 cm
This last piece is actually an oil painting. I include it only to show how Whistler employed a similar approach in another medium, including the quick deft strokes of the paint, the notes of intense color, and the striped patterns to grab our attention.

"Ken" - Pet Portrait Painting

We miss this face. Ken would watch me as I painted, or did anything else for that matter. He was a great listener, and would frequently talk back. I imagine that he would enjoy a quarantine, as he'd have more time to endlessly stare at me, or cuddle with Kimberly.

Painting Videos & Online Mentoring Program

Lights, camera, and action ...

By popular demand, Kimberly and I have been busy creating painting videos, and developing an online mentoring program.

We will all be able to paint together again someday. Nothing beats the energy of an in person workshop, and I already miss it. But in the meantime, we can keep our spirits up by practicing our art in the comfort of our homes and studios.

Hoping to have something to share with you next week ...
