John Singer Sargent - Alpine Pool Painting

The trick to painting water? There isn’t one.

John Singer Sargent's "Alpine Pool," which we recently viewed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a perfect example of why we should always remember that there are no “tricks" for good painting.

When viewing the painting holistically, the water in the foreground appears to be clean and transparent, revealing the rocks at the bottom of the pool, while the water in the center of the painting appears to be reflective, giving us a glimpse of the sky and the trees beyond the boundaries of the painting.

John Singer Sargent "Alpine Pool " • 1907 • Oil on Canvas  • 27 1/2" x 38"

On closer inspection, it’s clear that Sargent simply painted the colors, shapes and values as he saw them. There was not step by step layering or glazing. It appears that some of the dark shadows were even added last. He obviously never thought to paint water with a different approach than anything else.

Notice that the reflective portion of the water, the exposed rocks and even the grasses all share the same approach. Paint what you see, and it will always work. Whenever anyone tells you they know the "secret" to painting water, or anything else, run screaming.

Plein Air Easton 2019 - Quick Draw Competition Painting

I looked for shade today for Plein Air Easton's Quick Draw Competition, and I found it just outside The Tidewater Inn.

These tables were filled with people when I set up, but as soon as the horn blew for the quick draw, they all got up to either stand behind me as I was painting or go see other works in progress. I decided not to budge from my spot and went on with my quick draw sans people, because it's crazy hot out here today.

Plein Air Easton 2019 - Wake Painting

Kimberly and I had a good view of this boat just outside our window in Easton, Maryland, this week, so every morning I thought "I need to paint that."

Some of the most intense light and color happens just before the sun breaks the horizon in the morning. What made it even more interesting for me was the broken shadow shape created by the wake of other boats passing by on their way out into The Chesapeake Bay.

Plein Air Easton 2019 - Where The Wild Things Are Painting

While painting this scene in Easton, Maryland for the Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival, I was greeted by all of the local residents - birds, turtles, frogs, red foxes, deer, squirrels, spiders and snakes.

Normally I listen to music while I paint, but there was no need here, as I was serenaded by the constant calls and sounds of many of these creatures.

"Where the Wild Things Are"
• Oil on Linen
• 20"x24"

Available Friday evening at the Collectors Preview Party at the Academy Art Museum.

First Place - For The Love of the Moon Exhibit

I am so honored to learn that my painting won First Place at the Riverside Art Center's "For the Love of the Moon Exhibit", held in Neil Armstrong's hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

This piece means a lot to me personally, because painting it made me feel like a kid again. It's the kind of subject matter that got me excited about making art as a child.

My thanks to the Riverside Art Center for including me in this very special invitational, and thanks also to exhibit judge David Stark, chief curator of the Columbus Museum of Art. It was a privilege to be a part of commemorating this great moment in American history.

Nicolai Fechin Painting - "Reading the Newspaper, the Artist's Father"

During our museum hopping in Washington D.C., Kimberly and I were lucky enough to find this small yet dramatic painting by Nicolai Fechin on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery.

It’s currently in their visible storage collection, meaning that all of the paintings are crowded together in glass cases, but there are some real gems to be found there.

What strikes me most about this painting is the consistency of paint texture throughout the piece. There is no deviation in the approach to painting the face vs. the body or even the background.

"The artist must never forget that he is dealing with the entire canvas and not with any one section of it. Regardless of what he sets out to paint, the problem remains one and the same: with his own creative originality, he must fill in the canvas and make of it an organic whole." - Nicolai Fechin

Painting photos by Saunders Fine Arts.

"Reading the Newspaper, the Artist’s Father"
• Nicolai Fechin
• 1916
• Oil on Canvas
• 17"5/8x14"

Fechin makes no attempt to smooth out or stylize the face. He paints exactly what is before him in terms of lights, darks and colors.

The same applies to the hand. No over rendering is needed, as this would simply draw too much attention to it, and yet it reads perfectly as it grips the newspaper. Even with this lack of detail, we still get a sense of the years Ivan Fechin's hands have worked as a master wood craftsman.
