Kimberly and I had a great time in a city we love catching up with old friends and making some new ones. 

My thanks to Patti Harris for organizing my plein air workshop, and to her and Cabell Harris for hosting us. It was wonderful to see you both again. You are an incredibly talented creative team and just being in your company is inspiring.

Pet Portraiture - Dog Paintings

Kimberly and I are looking forward to some museum hopping next week that we've had planned for awhile, in between my Richmond, Virginia workshop and the Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival.

On a pretty long list is a visit to the American Kennel Club's Museum of the Dog in its new space since its return to New York from my hometown of St. Louis. 

As most of you know, pet portraits are hands down my favorite subject to paint, and Kimberly's favorite to photograph. Here are a few of my favorite dog portraits so far.

American Impressionist Society - 20th Annual National Juried Exhibition

I'm pleased to learn that "Feathers, Star & Sky" (oil on linen, 14"x18") will be featured in the American Impressionist Society, Inc.'s 20th Annual National Juried Exhibition. 

The show runs September 19th through October 2nd, 2019 at the Salmagundi Club in New York.

The brightly colored headdress worn by this young man at a pow wow in Prescott, Arizona commanded my attention. The challenge as a painter was to play down the obvious portrait and focus on the beauty of the feathered headdress.

My demonstration this morning on the last day of my floral workshop at OnTrack Studios, painted from life on the front porch on a beautiful but gusty day. It was so windy we had to tape the flower vase down, but we and the roses prevailed.

Louisiana artist friends, I’m teaching my last painting workshop of 2019 on September 12th - 14th at the Lafayette Art Association & Gallery.

Join me in Lafayette, Louisiana for a floral workshop, where you'll learn about choosing a subject, composition, values, color temperature, simplification, and more. Each day will include a full demonstration followed by opportunities to create multiple paintings with frequent one-on-one instruction.

Artists will work from both cut flowers in the studio and subjects on location. This oil and acrylics class is open to beginners as well as experienced painters.

The Art Loft Painting Workshop - Cityscape Painting Demonstration - Day One

The demonstration painting I did this morning is a great memory of our time living in Brooklyn. We took the Roosevelt Island Tramway on the Upper East Side one morning, and shot photos from the cable car. I printed out this cityscape a long time ago with the intention of painting it, but had changed my mind.
The artists in my Art Loft workshop saw the photo today and chose it because they wanted an exercise in simplification.

Painting Workshop - Carmel, Indiana - Group Photo

This group of artists worked really hard this week, and had a good time together, both in class and out. There are some card sharks in this bunch, so watch out. 😆

A five day painting workshop is a big commitment. My thanks to each and every one of you for staying at it with me. It was pleasure to paint with you.

A very special thank you also to Hewook Lee for hosting this workshop. It takes a lot of effort to organize a class, accommodate a big group, and still find the energy to participate in the workshop too. Kimberly and I had a wonderful week in Carmel, Indiana, and it's all thanks to Hewook. And Cloverbud. And Quincy. And Colby.

Now remember everybody, paint what you really see, not what you think you see, and measure, measure, measure.
