In Progress Painting - The Moon Landing

An in progress detail shot of my painting for the Riverside Art Center's For the Love of the Moon exhibit in honor of Neil Armstrong and the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing. 

This piece makes me feel like a kid again. It's the kind of subject matter that got me excited about making art as a child.

I won't be able to make it to the exhibit in Armstrong's hometown, Wapakoneta, Ohio, but if you can, go see the work of all the invited artists.

Floral Painting Workshop - OnTrack Studios, Franklin, Tennessee

Tennessee artist friends, registration is now open for my summer floral workshop at OnTrack Studios.

Join me June 13th - 15th near Nashville, Tennessee to learn about choosing a subject, composition, values, color temperature, simplification, and more. Each day will include a full demonstration painting, followed by opportunities to create multiple paintings with frequent one-on-one instruction.

Artists will work from both cut flowers in the studio and subjects on location. This oil and acrylics class is open to beginners as well as experienced painters.

Throwback Thursday - Waterlily Painting, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York

For #throwbackthursday, here's a piece from a beautiful spring in Brooklyn, New York, eleven years ago. Kimberly and I lived a few blocks from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and would often go on morning photo walks there. This painting is from a photo that Kimberly shot when the waterlily gardens were all in bloom.

My first painting for this year's Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival.

It was a sunny yet slightly hazy morning, but this group of beach goers brought their own blast of color.

U-Tiki Beach Plein Air Painting - 2019 Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival

When in Jupiter, Florida, you can take your yacht to your favorite beachside bar and grill.

A bit more whimsical than I usually work, this painting is as much a reaction to the atmosphere of the scene as it is the light, colors and shadows. 

I'm so pleased that it sold Friday night at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival VIP Collector's Party.

Seagrapes at Blowing Rocks Plein Air Painting - 2019 Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival

Sea grape trees are everywhere in Jupiter, Florida, but at The Nature Conservancy Blowing Rocks Preserve, they've grown together into a picturesque tunnel and sea wall that you can walk through all along the beach. 

While the tunnel is amazing, the colors and variety in the leaves themselves are also beautiful. I decided to focus in on the details rather than the entire scene. Kimberly posted a great photo of the path at Saunders Fine Arts.

Blowing Rocks Plein Air Painting - 2019 LightHouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival

My favorite spot in all of Jupiter, Florida.

This path through the Blowing Rocks Conservation Area is such a tranquil place. I love the palm and sea grape trees, the cool breezes, and especially the way the sun filters through the canopy and creates dramatic shadow patterns.

My thanks to 2019 Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival judge Jeff Markowsky for giving this painting 3rd Place this evening.

Certificate of Excellence - Portrait Society of America 21st Annual International Portrait Competition

I am so honored that "War Dancer" (oil on linen, 20"x24") has been awarded one of only 27 Certificates of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America for their 21st Annual International Portrait Competition.

This is my first entry into this competition, and it is a privilege to be included among such amazing painters. Congratulations to all of the other artists receiving awards.

My thanks to everyone at the Lighthouse ArtCenter for hosting my floral workshop this week, and a big thanks also to this phenomenal group of artists for painting with me. Some of you traveled from as far away as Laguna Beach, California and Curaçoa to take my class, and I am honored that you did.

It truly was a pleasure to work with each and every one of you. A lot of great art came out of this class, and we all had a good time in the process.

Floral Demonstration - Lighthouse ArtCenter Workshop, Day One

My demonstration painting this morning on day one of my floral workshop at the Lighthouse ArtCenter, about an hour-and-a-half-in.

The artists in this class are a really dynamic group, which I love, so I didn’t get very far on this demo. I did a lot more talking and answering questions than painting. It’s so invigorating to work with such attentive and inquisitive painters.
