My biggest portrait commission yet, quite literally. 

Definitely won't be working on this inside - can't quite fit it into the Sweet Potato.

"You Lookin' At Me?" - Plein Air Texas

As I sat to paint a herd of cows at the Mims Ranch just outside of San Angelo, Texas, one cow emerged from the group. She didn't seem too happy that I was there. She repeatedly stamped her feet and snorted at me.

"Heart of a Home" - Plein Air Texas

Sometimes the kitchen is the most inviting place in the house. 

That's definitely the case with this one in Christoval, Texas. It's the kind of space where you want to hang out with friends.

How do you get a donkey to pose while you paint?

Bananas.

Give her one, and she's good for twenty minutes.
Give her another, and she's back for more.

"Before Food Trucks" - Plein Air Texas

I had a little fun with the title on this painting.

"Before Food Trucks" (oil on linen, 14"x18"), a chuck wagon I painted for Plein Air Texas at the Mill Creek Ranch in Christoval, Texas.

Many thanks to Nolan Venable for allowing competition artists to paint again this year at his stunning ranch. I've included some photos Kimberly at Saunders Fine Arts took last year of this incredible property. You can see that it's difficult just to decide what to paint when you are surrounded by so much natural beauty.

Through the Trees, Salt Creek Beach - Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational

I find the trees in Southern California endlessly fascinating. 

At Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, California, there is a nice variety of trees. It's not just the textures and shapes of the trees themselves, but their shadows and light effects on the environment around them. With this painting, I set out to capture the late afternoon sun blasting through the lace-like patterns created by these interwoven limbs and leaves.

Nyes Night - Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational

I painted a daylight scene of Nyes Place in Laguna Beach, California during last year's Laguna Plein Air Painters Association's Laguna Plein Air Painting Invitational. I've been wondering all year how this scene might look as a nocturne due to all of the windows stacked atop each other. 

This was a quick one, only about an hour and a half, as I was afraid one of the many passing cars that stopped for a look might cause a traffic accident.

I decided to challenge myself with something different in this plein air painting. I rarely do big vistas, and I struggle with low light painting, but I just couldn't pass up the view at Dana Point Harbor in Dana Point, California.
