"Carl Sandburg" by William Arthur Smith - Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery

Here is an excellent portrait of celebrated American poet Carl Sandburg by William Arthur Smith at the National Portrait Gallery

Notice the difference between the traditional painting approach to the head and the modernist approach to the hands and lower body. The strong black marks in the blanket are reminiscent of Franz Kline or Willem de Kooning paintings.

There is a wonderful energy to the sketchy nature of the lower half of the painting that takes this piece beyond a standard portrait. The unfinished nature of the portrait gives the sense of a very animated sitter.

"Carl Sandburg" • William A. Smith • 1961 • Oil on Canvas • 39" x 36"

While more academically painted, the approach to the head is still made up of unblended brushwork. This texture ties the rendered face to the rest of the painting and gives a sense of movement.

"Carl Sandburg" Detail • William A. Smith • 1961 • Oil on Canvas • 39" x 36"
The hands are very simply sketched in. This adds to the overall movement of the piece, and also plays them down in importance. Our eyes are fixed on the face of the sitter.

"Dia de los Muertos" Portrait Painting

Happy Halloween everybody!

For #throwbackThursday, here’s one of my favorites from 2018, painted from a great photo shot by Kimberly at Saunders Fine Arts during a Dia de los Muertos parade in San Antonio, Texas

I loved the juxtaposition between the subject’s joyous expression and her macabre makeup.

John Singer Sargent - "Portrait of Ena Wetheimer: A Vele Gonfie"

"Portrait of Ena Wetheimer: A Vele Gonfie" • John Singer Sargent • 1905
• Oil on Canvas • 1630 x 1080 mm

This portrait by John Singer Sargent at the Tate in London makes me very happy. It's obvious from the informality of the sitter, Ena Wertheimer, that she and Sargent had become good friends. At the time, Sargent had been commissioned by the Wertheimer family to create a series of twelve portraits, and this one appears to be just for fun.

Not only is Ena genuinely smiling, but she is wearing the uniform of the Order of the Garter of the British monarchy. At the time the Order only admitted men, apart from the queen - a playful jab at the world order.

Look at the energy of the brushstrokes in the face. This was almost certainly painted in one session, and Sargent clearly had a lot of fun with it.

2019 Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational - Soft Morning at Dana Point Harbor

Just before the sun crests the hills to rise on Dana Point Harbor, the edges are soft in everything. This can make for a big challenge in painting, but can also produce some interesting effects. It’s my favorite time of day to paint.

2019 Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational - "The Light Dims on Laguna Canyon Road"

As Kimberly and I left California after the 2018 Laguna Plein Air Painters Association's #LPAPA20th, we were both struck by the glow of the eucalyptus trees along the highway to San Diego as the sun set over the ocean.

I thought about that scene all year, wanting to capture the way the light faded from top to bottom on those trees. I finally got my wish.

Painting Dynamic Portraits Workshop - Madeline Island School of the Arts

For those of you who like to take immersive painting workshops, and who need to plan ahead to do so, this month next year I’ll be teaching a five-day portrait class at the Madeline Island School of the Arts.

Treat yourself to a great getaway and join me in September 2020 at the beautiful MISA center in La Pointe, Wisconsin, where charming on-campus accommodations and meal options will allow you to focus on this intensive portrait workshop.

The painted portrait is not a face, it is just a collection of shapes, values and colors. I will teach you to paint what you see, not what you think you see. You'll not only capture a likeness, but create a dynamic painting with expressive brushwork.

Anthony van Dyck Portrait Painting - National Gallery, London, England

Here's a timeless portrait by Anthony van Dyck that Kimberly and I were fortunate enough to view at the National Gallery during our visit to London. If not for the fashion of the collar, it could have been painted today rather than 400 years ago. The textures utilized in the forehead and hair also make it appear very contemporary. It's important to also note that van Dyck painted this when he was only 21 years of age.

I included the frame, not only for its contemporary look, but to add that there is more of the painting hidden beneath it. The painting was extended within 15 years of its initial creation into a bust-length portrait, but clearly not by van Dyck. The frame is meant to hide this addition.

2019 Painting Workshops

I just finished my last 2019 painting workshop.

I taught 16 workshops this year, and 2020 is almost completely booked. I've even got a few classes already scheduled for 2021. This collage photo of painting workshops represents a lot of great memories for me, and I look forward to making even more.

I've been training artists and teaching art classes for almost 20 years, and I can honestly say that I really enjoy teaching, now more than ever. I'm not kidding when I say that I get as much as I give in my workshops. The artists in my classes help me to carefully think through and articulate what I do, and they challenge me to get better and better at communicating, and breaking down my approach to painting into a clear, workable process.

My heartfelt thanks to each and every person in this image, and to all of the hosts of my workshops. It's such a gift to be able to do something you love for a living, and to be able to share it with others.

Painting Workshop - Lafayette Art Association - Group Photo

I got a crash course in Louisiana culture at my floral workshop this week in Lafayette, Louisiana, and suffice it to say, my pronunciation needs work.

Kimberly and I shared a lot of laughs with this fun group of hardworking painters, and I hope each of you enjoyed this class as much as I did. You were all a delight to paint with.

My thanks to Daren Tucker for organizing this workshop, and to Arthur and the Lafayette Art Association & Gallery for facilitating it.
