Jack Richeson & Co. Grey Matters Brushes

In every painting class I teach, I'm asked this question: "How can I gain better control of my brushstrokes?"

While the full answer involves a number of things, most importantly practice, I often hand over one of my brushes and say "Try this." Almost every time I do, a short time later, the next question is "Where can I get these?"

I've used almost every brand of brush available. I tried Jack Richeson & Co. Grey Matters brushes for the first time just last year, and I've been using them every day since. They are still as good as new. I can't stress this enough - a quality brush that holds its shape perfectly, use after use, is essential to painting exactly the stroke you want, where you want it.

If you want to try the brushes I use every day, you can buy them here:

Pet Portrait - Ken

I was recently asked which of my paintings is my favorite. I would have to say that my portraits of our pets are still my favorite pieces.

Here's one of them, a detail of my portrait of our cat Ken. He hated it whenever we were doing anything that made our laps unavailable to him, and he would drape himself so his head hung over our old desktop computers, or the furniture, or whatever was handy that would allow him to stare us down until we were sufficiently guilt tripped into giving him a lap again.

Ellis County Art Association Floral Workshop II

I really enjoyed working with this great group of artists at my second floral workshop for the Ellis County Art Association in Waxahachie, Texas. They came to class intent on challenging themselves, and great things happened as a result.

I can't thank Tina Bohlman enough for inviting me to teach at such a great arts organization in one of the most charming towns in Texas.

Floral Demonstration Painting - Ellis County Art Association Floral Workshop II

I tried something new with this demonstration painting on the last day of my second floral workshop for the Ellis County Art Association.

This hour-and-a-half floral was painted by committee. I started it, and asked my class to evaluate it and provide suggestions based on all of the criteria we discussed over the past few days. I made changes based on their input, and together we solved problems and improved the painting.

Public Demonstration Painting - Ellis County Art Association

I really enjoyed my free public demonstration Monday evening at the Ellis County Art Association. I painted a marina scene for a great group of people that I had a lot of fun with.

Thanks to each and every person who attended, and my thanks again to Tina Bohlman and the Ellis County Art Association for yet another great experience.

Floral Demonstration Painting - Ellis County Art Association Floral Workshop I

My last two-hour demonstration painting for the first of my floral workshops at the Ellis County Art Association this month.

Ellis County Art Association Floral Workshop I

What a great group. Every single person had an 'aha' moment at one point or another, whether it was in color, value, or brush work. Painting florals teaches us so much.

My thanks to Tina Bohlman and the Ellis County Art Association for inviting me to teach two floral workshops in Waxahachie, Texas this month. I had a great time with my first group, and am looking forward to my second floral class, which starts Tuesday morning.

Everyone hard at work on the last day of the first workshop.

Our group critique at the end of the first floral workshop.

Me with all of the great floral workshop I artists.

Pet Portrait - Benton

A portrait of Benton I painted Friday as a gift for our wonderful 2018 Plein Air Easton housing hosts. Benton is just one of three orange tabby cats we're totally enthralled with this week.

Richmond Virginia Private Painting Workshop

I finished our visit to Richmond, Virginia, for Plein Air Richmond with a private two-day painting workshop. Our thanks to Cabell and Patti Harris for hosting us, and to Patti especially for organizing this workshop.
Day one of the workshop as I began my demonstration painting.

Luckily, the heat and humidity took a break for this workshop, giving us perfect weather for an outdoor class. Not everyone who wanted to participate could attend on both days, so we took a group photo each day to commemorate the experience.

Richmond Workshop Group Day One

We had planned to move to a local park on day two of the workshop, to give everyone the chance to paint a different location, but the grass was really overgrown at the time in this particular park, and there wasn't much seating, so class member Alice Massie volunteered to host day two of the class in her garden.

I really enjoyed painting with all of these artists. It was great to see some breakthroughs, especially on the second day, and we've already made plans for another workshop in Richmond next year.

Cabell Harris Portrait Commission

It's a quirky one, but this is definitely the man we know. I'm honored to have been asked to paint the portrait of creative genius Cabell Harris. "Cabell" (oil on canvas, 25"x30").

John Singer Sargent's Gassed Painting

If you live in or near Kansas City, Missouri, you have the opportunity right now to view John Singer Sargent's masterpiece "Gassed." The painting is on loan to the National World War I Museum and Memorial from the Imperial War Museum in London and is absolutely stunning in person.

The painting is over 20' in width, and having only viewed the piece in small print reproductions, I was knocked out by all of the elements that I never noticed before, such as the soccer game taking place behind the main figures, and numerous biplanes flying throughout the sky.

Through the use of temperature changes in the figures (and the ropes to the right), Sargent suggests that there are a number of tents to our right, and only a shaft of light shines through and illuminates the scene. In the background, however, the soccer game is in full sunlight.

Also, nowhere in the painting are we confronted with the eyes of any of the figures. I get the sense that Sargent was conveying the public blindness to the true horror of the war. The injured are moved into the shadows, while the uninjured go about their normal routine.

Plein Air KC

I was asked to be the judge for Plein Air KC this year, a great event that I participated in as an artist several times in the past.

Judging is never easy, because art is subjective, but I have a criteria that I use to evaluate paintings, and I explained my choices as clearly as I could at the awards ceremony. Here's a video of me explaining my selections.

I had the chance to do several live interviews with a local television station about the festival, and my philosophy on painting. Here's one portion of those interviews.

My thanks to Plein Air KC founder and chairman Kirk Peterson of the Penn Valley Park Conservancy for asking me to come back to the city that was my home for many years, and where I went to art school, to be a part of this festival. Congratulations to all of the many talented artists who came out to paint this year.

Alumapalooza 9 Fine Art Invitational Airstream Paintings

I just shipped my painting of our Sweet Potato, painted at Plein Air Texas last year, to the Airstream center in Jackson Center, Ohio, for Alumapalooza's 2018 Fine Art Invitational.

Invited artists' work will be shown this year at the Riverside Art Center, not far from the Airstream factory.

"Guest House" (oil on linen, 18"x24")

We had the opportunity to attend our first Alumapalooza last year, where my painting of our Bambi Sport 16 won the People's Choice Award.

"Bambi and the Barn" (oil on linen, 12"x16")

I will also be shipping my new mini painting of our old Bambi to Alumapalooza this year to be auctioned off to benefit the local Fish Pond Food Pantry.

"Bambi in the Woods" (oil on board, 5"x7")

Alumapaloozas are fun events with lots to see and do, and not just for Airstreamers. Visit this year if you can from May 29th - June 3rd. There is nothing else like it.
